Identifying Local Opportunities

ON THE RECORD- Language shouldn't be barrier to voting
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A92350DBBB78D8?p=AWNB
This article discussed the need for bilingual voting materials before the 2016 election. America is a melting pot for people all over the world and a majority of people do not speak English as their native language. The Voting Rights Act makes it that people taught in American schools deserve to get assistance to vote. This article specifically discussed the Latino vote not being wanted by not having translated ballots.
Latinos were discussed in the article as the individuals occurring this problem, but I feel this could be used for anyone that has moved to America and gained citizenship but does not speak English perfectly.

Ga Tech frat fight spills into Capitol
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A92350DD83C940?p=AWNB
This article discussed the fight that is occurring between the GA Tech fraternity Phi Delta Theta and the GA Tech Dean. Last August, Phi Delta Theta was accused on screaming racial slurs at an African American woman that walked past. During the lawsuit the fraternity showed security tapes of the woman walking past and not flinching and the windows of the house being completely shut. The Dean sided with the African American and did not allow the fraternity to appeal. Earl Ehrhart, a state representative, joined the fraternity in the fight and is bringing it to the state. He says that this is not just about the individual fraternity but about greek life as a whole.
While this was primarily about Phi Delta Theta at Georgia Tech, the overall individuals that have this problem is all of greek life on college campuses. Recently, the amount of sororities and fraternities in trouble for things that may or may not have truly occurred continues to increase exponentially.

Area ready for winter's worst - Planning, coordination started two days ago. - Atlanta, Georgia brace for snow, sleet, freezing rain

Two years ago Georgia was frightened with a winter snow storm that they were not able to handle and it left many people on the roads in their cars over night. With the upcoming snow storm, the residents and government of Atlanta were preparing for the snow storm that they hoped would not leave them stuck on the roads. Prior to this winter storm, the government of Atlanta ensured that they had enough workers and resources to handle any amount of snow that may come their way.
Residents of Georgia are the people being affected by this and the government. After the incident two years ago the government has been scrutinized for not planning ahead so ensuring having a safe and orderly plan will show to residents the government knows how to handle these types of problems.

Stadium delays force patience - Team's inaugural season could begin with many road games.
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A8CEC19F696990?p=AWNB
Creating a new stadium that is going to have state of the art technology and a retractable roof is in store for the Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta. Unfortunately the opening date has moved from March 2017 to June 1, 2017 making the new Atlanta United MLS team not having their home stadium available for them for the first three months of their season.
This problem is affecting both the team and the residents of the Atlanta area that have purchased season tickets. Having home field advantage is a huge part to sporting events and if people have already began purchasing season tickets they are going to be very upset that the games will either all be away or at a different venue that is not as nice.

Religious opt-out to gay protection sought
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A87A5299E136B0?p=AWNB
A State Senator of Georgia is bringing a bill to legislation that would allow individuals/institutions to have an exemption if their religious beliefs do not believe in same-sex marriage. This is saying that institutions would not lose government funding if they did not accommodate to gay individuals.
This legislation would affect the entire gay community of Georgia and could then begin having affects on people of any minority that people believe their religion does not believe in.

  1. Nice choices on your articles. I especially like the dual language voting article. There is some seemingly easy dialogue and action that needs to occur around the subject of voting. This is doubly true in the so called 'minority' vote. Between the lack of language interpretations, the restrictions on voting times and voter ID regulations there is a stranglehold on the voting population that needs to be addressed. Good posts and I hope they get the stadium finished soon; I'm not a fan of Atlanta teams in general but no one wants to play at another stadium :)

  2. Your 5 local opportunities were very interesting to read about. I particularly liked the opportunity about the stadium delays at the Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta. They want to create a high tech new stadium but I agree that the time spent on it is affecting ticket holders and the players. The outcome of a new stadium will be worth it in the end, but at the moment it is upsetting.
